Holding Companies-What are they?

Could someone explain what a Holding Company is exactly?

For Instance I was researching a company, let's call it KS, LLC

When search for it, I find that KS, LLC is also called FORBA

FORBA is listed as on at least two or three Holding Companies,NCDL, LLC, Arcapita Bank, Carlyle Group, and Capital Stratigies. I also found that the last three above formed another Holding Company called Small Smiles Holding to Purchase FORBA. Who has just been acquired by Sanus Holding all within a couple of months.

I've gotten so confused, so who would actually own KS, LLC?

Could someone on here please help me to understand how these things work. I much appreciate your help.

A "holding company" usually just means that a company's sole business is owning other businesses (or interests in other businesses) as opposed to having active business operations itself.
