Legal ? about designing baby clothing

What is the name of your state? Michigan

I am looking to start selling onsies (baby clothing) online (ebay) and at local mom 2 mom sales (like yard sale only bigger) with different sayings and designs. Would there be any implications with using a design or saying that I see on the web. Would I need to get permission to use the same saying or design on my clothing? How would I find out if something is copyright?
