Protecting my business' name

I am opening an automotive related business in Virginia. I want to protect and reserve its name nationally. Is a trademark the only way to do this? What other ways are there to protect the company name.

Regarding the trademarks, can I trademark the name and its logo in the same trademark? Will it hold power of protection of both the image/logo and the letters only name of the company?

I also want to protect our slogan/motto. Is a trademark the way to do this? Can I incorporate the business name, logo, and slogan/motto in the same trademark? If I do, will the mark hold its power for each separate item? Example, someone uses a very close image of my logo, but the name in the logo is a little different; or someone uses the name of my company, but without or with a different logo.

This is for the state of VA. I have a registered DBA as a sole proprietorship. I have a Federal EIN, State Tax numbers. I appreciate your information.
