I have seen genealogical resources in book form that are transcriptions of public records or public resources. For example, a book of obituary notices from a particular newspaper. Or a book in which passenger manifests have been transcribed.
What does the law say regarding publishing public records such as these? Does the newspaper have a copyright on these notices, or does it depend on how old the newspaper is?
Are the passenger manifests, usually kept by government offices, copyright-free?
