I live in Wisconsin. In Dec. 1999, my husband purchased a rottweiler puppy for $350 from a private couple that had bred their dog. We were told that the AKC papers were in the processing. I have waited and called numerous times and am kept being told that they still have not received the papers for AKC and should be getting them any time now. It is now almost 5 months later and I still have no papers to prove that my puppy is AKC. There is no way that I would have paid that amount, if I had known that I would have such a problem getting papers. Is there anything I can do? I am wondering if the people are trying to pull a scam and not registering the puppies or if they have not even tried.

My response:

Plenty of time has passed for them to obtain registration from the All Kennel Club (AKC). File your claim in Small Claims Court, along with a copy of your check, and your receipt for the dog. But first, you must be able to prove the value of your dog. Obtain written estimates from other respected breeders, concerning the values of similar dogs with and without papers. The difference between the two estimates is your measure of damages.

Good luck to you.
