I wrote last month (May 23) regarding equipment damaged by a rigger we hired to move it off our factory floor. During the move they damaged once of the machines to the tune of $1400.

Your reply was that they are not responsible because they were acting as an "agent."

Would you please elaborate on what defines an agent. If, for example, I hire an electrician to install a light fixture in my office and he burns down the building. Is he an agent and not responsible? Hopefully you can clarify this term.
