Resell name brand t-shirt?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TX
Legally, can a business buy a shirt at a store, say Bananna Republic, alter the shirt [like put a print design on it], and then resell it as their product? Thanks in advance!

Not unless you want to face a lawsuit that will strip you of any and all profits from the shirt.

Lets say you sell shirts with a design that you created at a weekend arts and crafts show. Someone sees your original design and buys a shirt so they can copy the design and put it on a handbag. The bag sells like hotcakes due to your design. The person who took your design makes a killing on it. They don't want to pay you anything for using your design, reasoning that you sold the design on shirts, they sold it on handbags.
