Live in NJ. Had a new driveway installed last week. Contract called for 2 payments. The first half was made 2 weeks ago as part of excavating. The second was made last week after installing material. Within a day problems were developing. After several verbal arguements with the contractor I stopped payment on the second check until this gets resolved (don't know if it will). Where am I vunerable from a legal aspect if this isn't settled? How can I protect myself?

He can put a mechanic's lien on your property, that would cloud title should you try to sell it. If you stopped payment as part of a bona fide dispute, that is not a crime.
