Why would a person use a tax ID number other than a social security number for ID purposes? Also, are there any advantages in doing so?

What kind of ID purposes? Please clarify your question. A SSN is a tax identification number for an indivdual. A tax ID number ie. Federal IRS EIN (Employer Identification Number) is for employers tax use.
