What does 'Associates' imply in law/accounting firm names?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? IL

What does the word 'Associate's mean in CPA/Law firm names?
There are many law and accounting firms that have ' & Associates" in their name.
What does that mean?

Is that just a name filler? or is there a legal requirement to do that for certain types of businesses?

Are there any legal ramifications if some firm adds the word Associates in its name and have no employees?

Thank you,
