What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MD

On 1098-T, line 2 lists tuition billed and line 5 lists scholarship amount. When line 5 is subtracted from line 2, is that the amount that is used to figure out the tuition and fees deduction (line 34 on the 1040) using form 8917?

What would happen if you ever used a tax professional to do your return instead of begging for free advice for tons of issues way over your head?
