Accountant Not Returning Calls - please help

I am a wreck. Our accountant filed an extensions for our 2004 taxes and we have not heard from him since. He hasn't returned any calls or emails. I'm going to his office tomorrow unannounced to find out what's going on, but in the meantime, I really don't have any single clue as to what our rights are. Hubby is self-employed and we have never used this accountant before. Quite frankly, our files are a mess due to the lack of guidance from the last guy (so we finally figured out) and so we thought we had everything under control and it seems we didn't. Basically, it is a big job and this accountant assured us it would be cleared up and taken cared of. What do I do? He has our paperwork and my biggest fear is that it's gone.... Please help.

you give no clue as to the subject of your calls or emails. did you pay him ? are you asking him to return your records ?

i extended a bunch of clients & haven't called them either, there's no reason to, they know that they still owe me some info.

you have a right to receive your records back & he has a right to be paid for extending your return.

how is it your blaming someone else becuase YOUR files are a mess ?

lack of control due to guidance from the prior one ? sounds like disorganization to me.

get your records back if you don't like the service, pay for what he's done for you, get organized & try someone else.

    subject was given

tdavidl - I did leave numerous messages asking for a status and to find out when we can meet with him to take care of this mess. Total disorganization - you got that right and no I wasn't blaming him for our mess, I'm just very concerned that we have not heard from him despite the messages, the emails, the fact that he has our paperwork. If we owe him more info, he has not specified. Don't you at least return calls?

We return calls, but for the months of June and July, our offices are only open one day a week. No point being open more than that, hardly anyone is interested in taxes this time of year.

It will pick up during the first two weeks of August, I'm sure.

If he isn't there when you show up, don't be angry. Just send him a certified letter asking for your papers back, and for a bill for whatever you owe him for filing the extension.

For future reference, you can file an extension yourself by simply calling the IRS, and it costs you nothing.
