Am I supposed to get a W2 or a 1099-MISC?

This summer I worked 40 hours a week for my employer. He gave me a 1099-MISC and told me it was better for students like me and I'd have to pay less taxes. However, I recently learned that this was not necessarily the case and I'd be better off with a W2 and that a 1099-MISC was not even the appropriate form for me. I reported to my workplace Monday through Friday from 10:30 AM - 7 PM to do some clerical work and data entry. I definitely considered myself an employee and not a contractor. What should I do about this situation, and does it really matter?
