avoiding sales tax on used car purchaseWhat is the name of your state? Missouri My wife and I just bought a used car in MO. The payment and ownership information is under her name. In MO, you must pay sales tax on any car you wish to register. However, there is a stipulation that states if the purchase is a gift, no extra tax is due. Can she "give me a gift" -- transfer the title to my name to avoid the backbreaking sales tax required? Thank You. |

| Betcha a shiney new dime she can't! My guess is that there is a requirement to pay sales tax on any title transfer, & an exception to taxing a transfer of title when the car is gifted. So, yeah, if she pays the taxes, then gifts you the car, you don't pay sales taxes again, but why bother?
