AWOL dependentWhat is the name of your state? North Carolina I have a stepson who is AWOL from the Army who has been living with my wife (his mother) and I for the past several months. He is 20 years old and has been AWOL for about 1 year. He does not work, so my wife and I support him completely as of about 6 months ago. Can/Should I declare him as a dependent on my 2007 tax return? |

| http://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#d0e3270 The IRS website has a good explanation of a qualifying child/relative. Is the real question, "If he is claimed, will the Army come looking?"

AWOL dependentThanks for the IRS link. That pretty much answered the question. To be honest, I hadn't really thought about whether the Army would come looking for him based on my taxes. I would have thought he would have a warrant out by now, but he was convicted on a DUI charge not long ago and it never came up. His military status is completely different issue... |
