What is the name of your state? Nevada I officially retired from my job from the federal government on April 01,2005 My place of employment was in the state of California. My present home is in Naveda. For the past five years I spent my time between my home in Nevada and my apartment in California. My question is will my income from January 1, 2005 to April 1, 2005 be taxed by California and will I be able to deduct my California income tax from my federal tax and also be able to deduct my sales tax from Nevada on my federal tax.

Actually, it was new last year.

You can deduct either sales tax or income tax, but not both, so choose whichever is more advantageous to you.

You'll file a CA part-year resident return & pay CA taxes on your wages. After you left CA, you became a NV part-year resident & pay NV taxes on your income.

The time that matters is when you ceased to be a CA resident. CA can tax all income up until that date. I suggest a tax pro this year.

You can deduct CA income taxes or CA & NV sales taxes, whichever is larger.
