CA - I used a certified tax preparer to do my 2009 and 2010 taxes and was later audited for both years resulting in a tax bill of $24,265. I contacted the tax guy and he provided me with more paperwork to take with me which was of no value in the end. He never took any responsibility and the fault was his. I had told him I received a lump sum for a class action settlement and he logged it as a schedule C as if I was some independent contractor and then had write offs against it. The IRS is trying to impose a huge repayment amount that I simply can't afford and according to their website I don't qualify for an Offer in Compromise. Are there any legal steps I can take against the tax preparer?
Thank you.
