claiming a dependant

Hi
I live in the state of maine. My wife was previously married she was divorced about six years ago. In her divorce degree they altered years they claimed their son. In the year 2000 her son
graduated from high school in June. He was 19yrs old. Needless
to say this is when child support stops. What we need to know
in the year 2000 if the divorce decree stops. We had him living
with us the whole year. Except when we paid for him to
go to college in the fall. If the divorce decree is still in effect he
is entitiled to the deduction. He has not contibuted for any car, college or living expenses.
We both claimed him on our 2000 tax return and just got a notice from the IRS.
Please Help!

Thanks in advance,
Norm

This one could possibly go either way, I suggest you send in a copy of the divorce decree and an explanation of the facts. Let the IRS figure out the law on it.
