claiming a foreign parent in your tax??Hi- I have been a US citizen since 2000 but I am responsible for an elderly parent who lives abroad. I do sent a monthly allowance via Western Union, so it is well documented. However, I have never attempted to learn more and so I never claimed my mother in my tex returns. I admit it is a big financial burden, and have no options but continue to support. Any chance the US tax code has something hidden I can take advantage of? I am not sure the tax preparers are knowledgeable on such a specific question, perhaps one of you does??? Many thanks David |

| There are treaty provisions if your parent is a resident of Canada or Mexico. If not, you're SOL. Snipes |

| If your parent was a resident of Canada or Mexico at some time during 2003 & you provided over 1/2 his/her support, you can claim him/her as a dependent. If s/he lived elsewhere, you'll have to hope a tax treaty covers your situation.
