What is the name of your state?Washington State

My Wifes father passed in 2001. We just received a notice from the IRS that we owe $10,000 to the IRS becasue of her fathers federal income tax. There is also over 1,000 in interest. We did not know about this tax, nor did we know we had to file for him. Is there anyway around this? Can this be written off as a death tax or something? Please help!!!!
Thank you

Get to a tax pro immediately. The executor of the estate is responsible for filing the final return and paying any balance due from the estate's funds before dispursing any property. Depending on the size of the estate & how the property was titled, you may not owe anything. Or you may have to pay the entire amount.
