Do I need to file Taxes This year? What is the name of your state? MO My grandpa is 77, not working, social secuirty, etc. I don't think the 'has' to pay taxes anymore (age, no job, etc.). But he does have a mortage. So does he have to file? If not, should he file anyway to possibly get something back on the mortgage intest paid? Thanks very much! |

| Whether or not he needs to file depends on his income. This would include interest, dividends, stock transactions, pensions, social security... If his income is higher than approximately $9000 per year (not including Social Security), he will probably have to file. If he has any stock transactions at all, he WILL have to file. Filing just for mortgage interest won't get him anything if he doesn't have any taxes withheld from his income, so it would be completely pointless. Bring him and his tax documents that he receives in January to a tax pro, and have them look at it and tell you whether or not he needs to file. This will cost about $10 but is well worth the peace of mind for most older people. Snipes
