Doing some website workHello all, About a year ago I was asked to do website work for my old highschool. I wasn't placed as an employee but I asked several times for a w-2. They kept saying that I didn't need one that I'd be fine. Were they ever wrong. I jsut have to say that site was pittiful and I spent a lot of time on it. I received an email stating that I have a 1099 waiting for me at the school that had 7510 dollars on it. Wow, i guess i worked a lot on it, anyways. I have to pay however much back on it for taxes. Now this is probably my mess but, are they in the wrong for not giving me a w-2 when i asked several times to? And when they told me to not worry about it. |

You are being treated as an independent contractor and NOT an employee. However, without knowing the exact terms of the project and your exact relationship with the school, I couldn't say for sure what your status was. Take a look at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99921,00.html In any case, it is YOUR responsibility to pay the taxes you owe from your work.
