Doing some website work

Hello all,

About a year ago I was asked to do website work for my old highschool. I wasn't placed as an employee but I asked several times for a w-2. They kept saying that I didn't need one that I'd be fine. Were they ever wrong. I jsut have to say that site was pittiful and I spent a lot of time on it.

I received an email stating that I have a 1099 waiting for me at the school that had 7510 dollars on it. Wow, i guess i worked a lot on it, anyways. I have to pay however much back on it for taxes.

Now this is probably my mess but, are they in the wrong for not giving me a w-2 when i asked several times to? And when they told me to not worry about it.

You are being treated as an independent contractor and NOT an employee. However, without knowing the exact terms of the project and your exact relationship with the school, I couldn't say for sure what your status was.
Take a look at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99921,00.html

In any case, it is YOUR responsibility to pay the taxes you owe from your work.
