What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Maryland
So, anyone have any thoughts about underpaying estimated Maryland state taxes by ONE cent and owing $80.56 in underpayment penalty. Really 1 cent. Done by a tax prep company. Not a huge deal to pay it, seems kind of unjust though.

Shouldn't the tax prep people cover the penalties?
Why should they? The failure to pay estimate taxes is a TAXPAYER penalty due to the TAXPAYER'S failure.

And OP, since any reputable prepaerer (not to mention people who do it themselves) uses the whole dollar method, even for calculating estimates and safe harbor liabilities, I'm calling BS on your $.01 causing the penalty. If nothing else, the penalty for underpayment is based on the difference between the underpayment and what was paid.
