What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? kentucky

In 2006 I purchased my home, my first home. I did not take the first time home buyer credit, because I was told you had to pay it back in five years, and I just did not want any more debt on my shoulders. I found out recently that it is to be paid back in fifteen years, at basically 500 a year. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to amend my 2006 return to claim this credit, or if I can claim it at any time or did I snooze and lose? I have not been able to find anyone with answers yet.
