FL Save Our Homes Exemption

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? FL

When we were married (3 yrs ago), my wife did not let the county tax appraisers office know that she moved to my home thereby still claiming her FL Save Our Homes program that allowed us to save on real estate taxes. We have now been notified that the County knows she does not live in that home. We will now be obviously responsible for the difference in the taxes owed for the 3 years plus penalties (aprox $8,000). My question is: My wife is affraid that she will now have to go to jail over this issue, is that true. I would think that we will indeed need to pay the $$$ but she will not go to jail. Do you think we should get a lawyer or just plead our case to the County Appraiser and pay the $$$.
