how to correct previous error in tax rebate

What is the name of your state? Massachusetts

hi,
two years ago, on my friend's advice i have applied for a tax rebate and got that.

but now i came to know that i was not eligible for it. now what should i do?

if i write to the tax authorities; will they levy a penalty on me? or any other fines? What is the name of your state?

A tax rebate for what? Federal or state?. There is no where near enough information here for anyone to give you any viable advice.
