What is the name of your state? New Jersey and New York

I was an exotic dancer for most of the last 20 years and worked for cash. I have not filed tax returns or paid taxes except for a couple of fake returns that a customer helped me with over 10 years back. My ex-boyfriend has decided to turn me in to the IRS, the state tax agencies of NY & NJ, and the departments of labor in both states. He doesn't have any of my actual income records, but he did give them addresses of where I lived in the past (for utility bill and bank account searching) and the names of most of the clubs I've worked at, plus one of my date books with my work schedule for 1993. He also told them about the cars I've purchased and the two homes I've helped my parents to buy. He never included me in his tax filings for the 12 years we lived together. I have no actual assets in my name. Can I really get caught for anything? I'm sure I made well over a million dollars, but there are no records.

Your boyfriend sounds like a real charmer. The bad news is, you are guilty of tax evasion. The good news is, your income is not easily traceable. This doesn't get you off the hook, but there's less the IRS can prove with certainty.

You are going to need a good tax lawyer to help you negotiate with the IRS. If you 'play ball' they will probably let you settle for some fixed amount with a payment plan. They don't really want to put people in jail -- they just want the money, and nobody earns money in jail. Good luck.

Very interesting

I seriously doubt this boyfriend is going to turn you in. Guys say things like that when they do not get their way or what they want. Even if he does turn you in, I seriously doubt it will go anywhere. I doubt the IRS or the state has someone answering the phone taking calls from people who want to rat on other people. Chances are nothing will happen. I would not worry about it until something does happen. Got any pictures you can share? ;)

I do know for a fact that he did send all of the information to the different tax agencies. We are going through a custody fight for our kids. His lawyer even got a tax lawyer to prepare the submission of my information to the tax agencies. What could happen to me?

Once you start hearing from the various taxing sources, then you are going to need to hire yourself a tax attorney. They may or may not follow through....its depends on whether or not they believe that they can reasonably trace any income to you.

You are going to have to be prepared to owe a fairly serious chunk of money to the various taxing sources....start putting money aside to deal with this.

**A: start a porn website and pay the taxes from your additional income.

Or, start a career as a GAY porn star.

Then, when they catch up with you and throw you in jail, you'll have 'experience'.

I'm afraid the IRS will put a lien against the homes I put my money into (or even take them!) even though they're deeded to my mother and sister. We can't prove how we paid for them.

I'm also worried about going to jail.

How am I going to explain that I had the checking accounts, bought cars and paid other bills like utilities and auto insurance, but didn't file tax returns?

The family court judge also wants to know if it's true that I didn't pay any taxes!

Well, duh! You didn't pay taxes & you did have lots of income. If the IRS contacts you about back returns, you'll have to file. And pay megabucks. Or go to jail for tax evasion. And why should a judge award custody to the parent who's going to jail? It may only be Club Fed, but you'll have a hard time making the kids' lunches for school!

The IRS probably can't take the houses unless they could show that you were really the owner & the houses were just in other people's names to avoid siezure. Since the owners are living in the houses, the houses are probably safe.

Why haven't you seen a tax lawyer yet???

First, the IRS can't place liens on property deeded to others....for your tax obligation.

Jail isn't likely....the IRS can't collect any money from you if you are in jail.
You can't explain how you supported yourself but didn't file tax returns....that is why you are going to have to be prepared to spend some money, both in representation and in paying taxes. However, the IRS is only going to be interested in the last 7 years.

Go get a consult with a tax attorney.

DUH! I guess you could have thought about that, when it was time to file your taxes for all those years. Gee, I wish I could feel special like you, and not pay my taxes.

The family court judge also wants to know if it's true that I didn't pay any taxes! Boo Hoo :(

Christ lady, you are getting what is due to you.

I think you are right to worry about those houses. The IRS doesn't allow people to "give" assets to relatives in order to avoid paying back taxes, penalties, etc. That was part of the purpose of all those new "racketeering" statutes. Even innocent parties have to be a little careful who they sell a house to these days. If the money has come from illegitimate sources, for example, you could find the funds frozen and your house tied up in a legal battle. You willfully avoided paying taxes, and this might be viewed as some form of money laundering scheme.
