Illegally taxing only property owners

What is the name of your state? Louisiana

In the recent election in Jefferson Parish, an item was added to the ballot. Since the school board can't seen to spend the money wisely, they've decided they need more of it. As a result, the item on the ballot was to get teacher raises from hiking up property tax, however the vote was open to everyone including non-property owners. Since we have a homestead exemption, the only people to pay this hike will be the more wealthier home owners and businesses. As a child, I remember my parents had to bring in their form showing they owned property to add anything to their property tax bill.

QUESTION: Is it legal for everyone to vote for raising property tax, even if it doesn't affect them ??

It would seem the purpose of voting in a democratic system is because everyone is affected, yet this doesn't affect everyone. Even if you own property under the homestead exemption and won't have to pay the taxes, is it still fair for someone renting to vote on this tax ??

Thanks,

Charlie III

Your question has been answered by the Supreme Court. Yes, it is legal.

Or do you pay a different tax for the gas you use in your car as opposed to the gas you use in the lawnmower? The next time you're at the pump read how much goes for road taxes. Why should you pay for the road when the gas is for the lawnmower?

Because the society as a whole reaps the benefits and one of the benefits of owning land and propery is to be taxed.
