Income Tax filing 'Married - Jointly/Separate'

What is the name of your state? NM

A couple of questions. What reason is there to file 'Married - Separately' instead of 'Married - Jointly'?
If a couple has filed 'Married - Jointly' in the past, will filing 'Married - Separately' be a problem from henceforth?

For most married couples, married filing separate results in them paying more tax than they need to pay.

There could be valid reasons to file separately, but we can't give advice in a vacuum.
