Incorrect 1098's for 2001 & 2002What is the name of your state? TX My husband & I have had a home equity loan for about 8 years and have always claimed the interest at tax time. Several months ago I discovered that the bank had changed the social security# on the account sometime during 2001, so the interest was reported under the wrong ss#. After several meetings the bank finally managed to get the social security# corrected, but when I asked about correcting the 1098's, I was told they could not do that. My question is, since the interest was reported under the wrong ss# isn't the bank required to correct that with the IRS? Thanks, deeleeh |

| Yes, but why make a stink about it until the IRS write you a nastygram? Get a letter from the bank stating that the interest was reported under the wrong SSN & stick it with your tax returns in case you need it.

| I was thinking that might work, but getting a letter has been problematic as well, they won't do a letter stating that it was reported under the wrong SSN. They will however send me a standard form letter stating how much interest was paid during those years. However, this letter shows no SSN only an account number. The problem is the account# was changed in April (?) of 2003 when the bank updated its system and the letters show the new account#. deeleeh |
