Question

Mileage deduction

My husband works in construction. From what I have read, I believe his mileage to the construction sites would be considered business mileage. My confusion is this: He put 18,000 miles on his truck this year, and 13,000 of those miles were business miles (traveling to construction sites). Turbo tax requires me to enter a "commuting miles" number also, but since he does not have a main office that he travels to/from, do I just enter "1" so the field has something in it?

business owner here

i pay my employees milage which starts at the job site, then job site to job site. the last job site halts milage.

i don't pay for going to "the office" or going home from "the office"

as an employer, i may consider nego. a milage aggrement, if he/she were a valuable employee.

get it in writting

to anyone who read the post that I made and now deleted.

I realized that the method of computing mileage that was used by my former employer (company) did not apply to this situation as we were reimbursed for business miles. My apologies to anyone that I misled or confused.

I agree with you. If your husband’s work at a specific construction site is expected to last one year or less, it is considered a temporary work site and he can deduct the cost of traveling to and from the site.

As for the Turbo Tax entry, I suggest you put 0 in the commute mile box.
