What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Illinois

We purchased a home and received the homeowners tax credit. I have accepted a promotion in PA and will have to move.

My wife will be staying in the house until she finished school, which will take about a year and then we'll meet the 3 year requirement for owning the home.

What do I need to do in order to keep the tax credit?
Can she rent out a room in the house and not violate the tax credit rules?
Should I avoid registering my car or updating my addresses for my PA apartment?

Thanks,
Devin

One of you must maintain the house as your principal residence for the full 36 months to avoid having to repay the credit (I assume we're talking the $8000 2009 First Time Homebuyer Credit). You can rent out the house long as you don't rent out the entire house.
