| All states impose a use tax on goods bought outside the state but used in the state. Essentially, this makes you pay the sales tax on the fair market value of the vehicle as of the day you brought it into NC. However, NC should give you a credit for the tax you paid when you bought it if you can produce a bill of sale that shows you paid sales tax to MI. Any difference in the sales tax rates should be offset by the difference between the value of a brand new truck on the showroom floor and a truck that's been driven 1000 miles and is therefore used.

At that time I had title(state of Michigan) and a bill of sale but no mention of any credit. My fault for not persuing. They relieved me of the title that michigan had issued to me, and i was informed that under NC law i was not allowed to hold title where there was a lien on property. just kind of difficult to understand all these laws and such. Again thanks for the response. S3 |
