My wife and I currently have a property in CT. During the week, she works in NJ and I work in NY. We are considering buying a second property - an apartment in Manhattan. We currently file taxes jointly. We are wondering whether it is possible to avoid paying NY city and state taxes on our income. I believe this is fundamentally an issue of residency; formally, if we have spent 184 days or more in New York State during the tax year, then we are assessed as residents for tax purposes. But in practical terms, how does this work?
