For the year 2002, I had income from the state of NY only (though I was a resiedent of NJ). I filed taxes for NY state and the Federal tax. At that time I was unaware of there being a need to file NJ tax. NowI have received a letter from NJ state with the estimated tax liability. The estimated liability is at least 5 times higher than what the actual tax should have been. Is there a way to avoid the penalty etc? Go ahead and get your return filed. Odds are that your final liability will be much less than what is being estimated now.
