non-filer.

i am not a tax pro or expert but...

i would say that the first thing you need to do is figure out/guess how much you earned and might owe, plus penalities and interest and then find out what are the best options for you, what is the worst that could happen, what is the best RESULT that could happen if your filing became current, what are your rights and options, what is the best way for you to LEGALLY work the system, who will be the best advocate for you, that sort of thing.

in my opinion you should learn as much about your situation, what you will have to deal with if you start filing again, before you file or contact the IRS.

this is not "legal advice", so be warned and look out for yourself because the IRS will not.

Go to a tax preparer for help with the returns. If the IRS hasn't contacted you by now, chances are their records have you down for a refund. You can only claim refunds from 2000 or later; the others have expired. You can get copies of your W-2/1099s from the IRS office. You also need to file IL returns.
