Non filing/ Filing false returns?What is the name of your state? NJ Hi All What is the bigger crime. 1- Not filing income tax returns? Being a non filier. or 2- Filing false returns? Whether for a refund or just under reporting your income? Thanks in advance, acesfull |

| Filing a false return. Filing a false return is a crime. OTOH, you are not always required to file a return (income too low). Also, if you have a refund coming, failure to file has no penalty, since the filing penalty is tied to how much you owe.

| Also, just an FYI - if you have any income where there is a W2, 1099, or other paper trail involved, the IRS will most likely eventually find it. When returns are processed, part of the process entails 'computer matching' to verify reported income against known income. |
