Non Profit Booster Club - Start Up Help

What is the name of your state? Michigan

I became the president of a booster club in its second year. The previous president filed as a non profit corporation in Michigan but left it at that. I was told we need to complete a 501c3 to become non profit through the IRS. I printed some information, but would feel a little more at ease if I could discuss the process first. If anyone can give any advise, I would greatly appreciate it!
