Offer and Compromise

California

My wife worked 8 years some time ago without paying taxes. She has a payment arrangement with the IRS, and has been making monthly payments for 4 years or more now. She tells me the balance is still in the six figure range, more than our combined incomes for a year! I find this astounding, and more than a little unsettling. We'd have to sell every stick of furniture we have to raise that, or continue paying past our deaths at this rate. Is there any hope other than moving out of the country? We are in our forties and of modest means, and never intended to cheat anyone, then or now. She made a poor decision then, does it have to cost us the rest of our lives? Must we abandon our dreams at owning our own home? I've heard many wild claims about offer and compromise, but even raising ten percent would leave us penniless or living under a bridge. Any help or avenues of exploration would be graciously welcomed...

You need to be talking to the IRS, not asking questions on an internet forum.

Find an Enrolled Agent in your area to help you.
