What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Maryland

My son in law is a full time student who does occasional piano recitals and performances for which he is paid. He received a 1099 Misc. form that has the income he was paid marked on line 3 of the 1099 as Other Income. Can he report this income on line 21 of the 1040 or does it have to be reported as income om Schedule C requiring him to pay FICA, Medicare tax, etc. The income was about $9600.

It's difficult to answer this type of question.

I know that I put the information into the computer program to see what it shows, both ways, for a tax return, and then, I spent the time researching, reviewing the information before contacting the IRS advocate telephone line.

Even if your son has no deductions for the income and could put it as "other" income, you would still need to file the SE and pay the tax. I'd put it on Schedule C and take the deductions.
