Question

paid vehicle tax 7yrs ago but they say no...

What is the name of your state? N.C. I received a threatening letter from Randolph County Tax Dept.in North Carolina. They claim that I did not pay a vehicle tax that was due back in Dec. 1997. I'm almost certain that i paid this bill but being 7 years ago I no longer have proof. I lived there for 9 more months never receiving another bill or statement saying that I did not pay until two days ago. The letter i received said that if I did not pay this matter in three days they were going to garnish my wages, get to my bank account or my state income taxes, or take my current vehicle. Can they do this even though I dont reside in that state any more? Is there anything I can do other than pay this again?

Your bill should have contact information. Make sure the contact is legit and not a collection agency. These scums use all kinds of ways to threaten people.

Call the number on the bill and dispute it. They should at least provide some proof that they had demanded payment.

You could also check if you are protected by your state's statue of limitation.
