part year resident taxes - online

What is the name of your state? Mississippi

Hi there,

I used to live in Michigan (Jan 07 to Mar 07). Got married in Feb 07. Moved to Mississippi in Mar 07. My wife didn;'t work in 2007 and we rent. Now, I have a couple of questions. I read somewhere that when filing part year resident taxes, I can only efile for one state. Is that true? Does it matter which one I efile? Regarding federal taxes, I am not sure how to file them. Can I add the amounts in my 2 W2's (one from MI and one from MS) for fed tax withheld (not sure)? Any help is appreciated. What are my options? Can I efile using one of the sites that offer such service or do I have to go to a professional at H&R Block or something?

Thanks for your help!

Honestly, part year returns for multiple states are a bit of a headache even for tax professionals.

The federal side is easy because the feds don't care which state had what income, so efiling the federal return is no different than if you had all of your income in one state. The state side of things is where it get complicated.

It may be true that for any one online source you might only be able to efile one state. Its not necessarily true that that multiple states can't be efiled. Our firm files lots of returns electronically with multiple state filings. However OUR state does not permit a return to be efiled if its a part year return. It has to be done via a paper return.

Personally...I would recommend using a tax professional for this year.
