What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? West Virginia

My best friend recently quit a job that was through a temp agency even though he had worked at this moving company before, but they said they had to go through this agency anyhow, his rate of pay was wrong by 1.00 and they said they would fix it, but in the meantime he and one of the bosses had a small arguement and he decided not to go back and already started another different job. He did contact a supervisor the next day to let him know he was no longer going to be working there, well 2 checks were received on the same day from the temp agency which was as always the way he got paid, but on the one check he had 36 hours at 8.50 and then taxed 59.49 and the in deductions there was an adjustment of 233.59, so tax earnings were 306.00 and post-tax deductions(which had never been on there before) were this 233.59 and was not taxed and he received 12.92 amount of final pay check. What is the post-tax deduction, and why did they take out this adjustment? The other check was similar but had 25.50 hours at 8.50 which was 216.75 earnings, and the taxes were 36.28, then again in the deductions it says adjustment 171.60, and the net earnings ended up being 8.87 final. He always claimed 0 on federal and state filing information. and this check is dated 12/06/2009 and the other check is dated 12/13/2009. He check before these final ones was correct and dated 12/20/2009, so why are the dates on the final ones different and earlier then they should be. Help I am so confused and don't know where to start! What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

He needs to either ask the former employer what the deductions were for, or just file a complaint with the state DOL since he received less then minimum wage for his hours worked.

Just so there is no confusion...he needs to ask the temporary agency what the deal is since they issued the checks.

I'm not yet convinced there is a violation of the minimum wage law. If the individual authorized the deductions for a valid purpose, it would probably be OK.

So, until we know what the deductions were FOR, we can't say whether a wage claim is called for or not.

Your post is incomprehensible. Show specifically what the deductions were for and then maybe we can help you. What exactly on the pay stub is your "best friend" disputing?

It may be a penalty for quitting without notice. Or the agency had to refund their fee and are taking it back from him.
