There are free tax-filing assistance sites located around NYC. To find the site closest to you, simply dial 311. For calls outside New York City, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

Welfare is not income, but it does count as "support" provided by someone other than you. This may prevent you from filing as head of household, claiming a child as a dependent, and other things.
