Question about ssi and claiming dependent

What is the name of your state? Alabama

I live with someone whom I can legally claim as a dependent. This person has an ongoing appeal for supplemental social security income (ssi). The appeal goes back to the latter part of 2006 to the present. I want to claim her as a dependent for 2007. Will that affect her appeal in any way?

If she's your dependent, then your income should be included in her household income and would affect her SSI benefit calculation.

She hasn't received any benefits for over 6 years. She filed for benefits about a year ago and was turned down. A law firm is appealing her case. Its been going of for about a year now. They tell me it could go into 2009. I don't know if her appeal will be successful. What should I do? I need the deduction, but I don't want to jeopardize her appeal.

If you are supporting her, claim her. Is she applying for SSI or SSDI? If she is applying for SSDI the fact that she is currently your dependent is not relevant. It could be however for SSI if you are her spouse or parent. If you are not, its also irrelevant.

That is not correct unless he is her parent or spouse. This isn't welfare, its potentially SSI or SSDI.

I am not her parent and I am not her spouse. I THINK its SSI, not SSDI. I just don't want to mess up her appeal. I suppose I am going to claim her. Thanks.
