What is the name of your state?NC

My father died last year. He was 83 yrs old. No spouse involved. The children rec. his 401k from the estate. I am trying to find out if we need to claim this on our tax return. I'm getting conflecting advice. Some say a return needs to be made in my father's name. Some say we have to add it to our return as income(1099). Any advice??

401K funds will be taxable to you, because they would have been taxable to him, had he withdrawn them.

You will receive a 1099 from the company which held the funds.
