What is the name of your state?Va.
I am writing about MY State taxes I have never filed a state tax because in 1985 when I started working my gross income was under 6,000 and I was always due a little refund and I just let the date to file get away from me. But in 1996 I started watching children in my home and I believe I owed a little amount of taxes I'm not sure and I didn't file because out of habit I let the time slip by. I got my taxes done professionally this year and when they did my State taxes I didn't owe anything because my income was 8,685.00 after the expenses was taken out and they gave me a low income credit. And the previous years my income has been lower then that so what I am asking is should I file all the previous returns. And how should I go about getting them done; plus if it shows that I do not owe anything will I still be penalized for not filing?
Listed below are the amounts for each year; can anyone help me with this?

1985 5,592.00
1986 7,323.00
1987 7,473.00
1988 2,431.00
1989 5,263.00
1990 6283.00
1991 699.00
1992 2,602.00
1993 3,002.00
1994 7,892.00
1995 6,540.00
all of those taxes were taken

these are the years of my daycare in my sisters home
1996 10,408.00
1997 6,758.00
1998 4,726.00
1999 5,274.00
2000 5,033.00
2001 4,061.00
2002 2,762.00

at the very least you should file 2001, 2002, 2003 if requried by the state. use the person who prepared your 2004 return to do them, they should be able to handle it.

most states impose penalties based on the balance due. some states may have "minimum" penalties for late filing. so if no balance due, maybe no penalties.

ask your current preparer if you were reqauired to file the state returns & if so, ask them about the possibility of penalties if no balance is due. they should be able to answer this.
