Question

Statute of Limitations on Locals in PA

What is the name of your state? PA

Is there a statute of limitations on local taxes in PA?
Last year, we couldn't pay our local (borough, school, county) taxes, but when we got our federal refund this year, we made it good.

In the mean time, we got a letter from a law firm (Powell, Rogers, and Speaks) attempting to collect the past due debt. I told them it was paid, wait for the paperwork to catch up.

Fast forward a couple months, we get a letter from them saying hubby didn't pay local tax in 92, 94, 95, 97, and he owes almost $700. I have no way of knowing whether this was paid because I didn't know him then. HOWEVER, I believe the statute of limitations has past on it, if it was owed.

Now, this is the first time he ever heard from this firm, and was ever told he had any unpaid tax (when we failed to pay the 2004's on time).

A really NASTY girl on the phone tonight claimed we had 7 days to pay or they would garnish our wages. What do we do?

Pay nothing to the Collection Agency. Contact the City directly to find out what is owed, and then pay it directly to the city.
