Statute of limitations for the State of Virginia

What is the name of your state? Georgia

I was just contacted by a collection agency stating that I owed personal taxes to the State of Virginia for the the years 84 and 89.
Upon contacting the state I was informed that a lean had been placed on anything that was attached to my ssn. I asked where they sent the notice of intent to lean to and they gave me a address that I do not remember living at. I moved from VA. 11 years ago. What are my options at this point they say the lean will not be lifted until the taxes are paid in full and that they do not have to try to locate me other than the last address they have on file. The lean was placed on me march 4 2002. Any info welcome

Check with a local attorney to see whether the debt is too old to collect, and what procedures your state requires for a lien to be validly filed. You may have some sort of automatic appeal in your state that could get the lien voided.

Also, by filing a lien, the state has reopened your tax case. They may have waited too long to do so. You may also be able to challenge the assessment.

Wink

thank you

I have contacted a firm I do computer work for and they can not find a statute of limitations for the state of Va. Is it that guarded a secert that they would not publish it. I left Va. just for this reason I never understood the way the laws work in that state.

I was told by Va. that a few years later they audited my personal return and found a error for 1989 but they will not tell me the year of the audit. Question do I not have the right of that information. When I contacted them they dropped the $150.00 They said I owed for 1984, but still want 2700.00 they say I owe for 89 but the math is funny I would of had to of been making a rather large amount of money in 89 to owe that much back tax.
I make 38000.00 here in Ga, and my taxes are under 1000.00.
I don't understand
