stimulus check

What is the name of your state? vt..Our stimulus check was suppose to be 1800.00. We got our check today for 900.00. There is child support arrears owed by me. I figured they would take my 600.00. Well, they took half. Why? My husband did an 8379 injured spouse when he did his taxes. I called the offset dept of IRS and was told the IRS decided that if arrears is owed they would deduct 50% of stimulus check. That is unfair to my husband whom is not in debt or his kids. When I call the 800 number on this I cannot get through due to so many calls they are getting. Even though they are government checks, can the IRS decide to do this? Thanks

The stimulus check isn't an overpayment that would be protected by the injured spouse procedure. As far as i know they could take it all.
